The Healing Power of Friendship

At the Primate Rescue Center, fostering companionship opportunities is an important part of the primates’ rehabilitation journey. The chimps and various monkey species we care for are naturally social animals, but were deprived of those crucial relationships in their captive life before sanctuary. Whether they were born in a laboratory or at a breeding facility, they all share one thing in common — they were not given the chance to be raised by their mothers or be comforted and guided by their biological family as they matured. 

Our goal with each primate we rescue is to give them not only the proper nutrition, medical care and enriching environment they need to thrive, but to also provide the opportunity to find the companionship they were deprived of in their former situation. 

Sounds simple, right? Actually, it is often a long process that takes patience and attention, and there’s no guarantee that everyone will be accepting of a friend. For some of our residents, having endured years of living alone in a human home with no others of their kind with which to interact, they have an extremely difficult time adjusting to life with a companion. Some reject the arrangement altogether and prefer to live near other primates, but not with. This is all part of the journey we take with those we rescue, with a focus on meeting them where they are and supporting their choice. 

However, most rescued primates are eager for a companion. They decide that their past does not define them and take that huge leap toward a future filled with cozy nights snuggling up, grooming sessions and relaxing afternoons, the joys of discovering enrichment and observing their environment, all with a friend by their side.

Our ability as a sanctuary to offer these social opportunities requires careful planning and a foundation of reliable care that first focuses on each individual resident’s needs.

• Species-specific medical care and age appropriate medicinal and supplemental support
• Strong and diverse enclosure spaces that support their physical needs and offer security
• Enrichment that creates moments of joyful discovery, offers choice and engages curiosity and natural physical skill

When provided with these crucial components of care and attention, a monkey or chimp can then feel secure, rejuvenated, safe and ready to find that friend they’ve been longing for. And we all know, some of the best moments in life are the simple ones: good food, good company, and plenty of time to enjoy both. 

There is no single version of what a close relationship looks like. Just like everything else about the individuals in our care, the relationships they build are uniquely their own. Some are rarely more than an arm’s reach apart. Others connect through play, grooming or simply choosing to spend time nearby. And sometimes, two individuals who have only just met seem remarkably at ease with one another.

Ike and Rodney – buddies since they were babies, this friendship has stood the test of time. Their time together can get loud: laughing, chasing, wrestling, displaying and generally testing the patience of anyone trying to nap nearby. Rodney, the more playful of the two, can often coax serious Ike into joining the fun. And when Ike starts the game? Rodney rarely needs convincing. Eventually, even these two settle down for grooming and naps side by side.

$25 – Comfort & Rest — Provides paper, burlap and other bedding materials for comfortable rest and nesting.

$250 — Rx Care — Helps provide prescription medications, supplements and other ongoing health needs for chimpanzees who require them.

$500 — Safe Spaces — Provides cleaning, repair and maintenance supplies that keep the chimpanzees' indoor and outdoor spaces safe and well maintained.

$1000 — Dedicated Care — Substantial support for the skilled care that keeps the chimpanzees healthy, engaged and well cared for every day of the year.

$1500 — Winter Warmth — Approximately covers one propane delivery to heat the chimpanzees' indoor home during Kentucky's colder months.

$2500 — Lifetime Care — Invests in the care that has sustained this chimpanzee family for over 25 years.
