The mission of Pro Kids, First Tee – San Diego is to challenge underserved youth to excel in life by promoting character development, life skills, and values through education and the game of golf.
Pro Kids is a community built by and for our Pro Kids Members and was founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to excel in life. We envision a future where golf is a sport for everyone, accessible to anyone. We take responsibility for our role in building a culture of golf that elevates the social/emotional health of all the communities we serve and makes inclusivity, respect, and equity on the golf course and in the classroom a priority through our programs:
Golf & Life Skills Program: Led by certified golf instructors, this program introduces the game of golf to kids ages 7-17, reinforcing values like integrity, respect, and perseverance during each golf class. Our 8 to 1 class ratios allow meaningful instruction for Pro Kids Members new to the game.
Pro Kids Academy Program: Pro Kids Academy is an afternoon program for children ages 7 and older designed to provide opportunities for academic assistance, tutoring, workshops, structured curricula, and extracurricular activities. Often times the Academy introduces our members to subjects, opportunities and experiences that they wouldn't otherwise have.
Meal Service Program: Community members can drive through or walk up to receive free meals during the week at both Pro Kids campuses. Meals are also offered to members during program hours. This program began at the onset of the COVID-19 Stay-at-Home order when families were unable to get groceries or meals like they usually would. Though we are no longer under these restrictions, we have discovered that there is still a need for the meals. Due to this, we will continue to provide meals to our communities, families, and youth.
Pro Kids Scholarship Program: Since 1999, Pro Kids has awarded over $2.8M to 280 Pro Kids Scholars. This program is the culmination of all other programs and reflects our founding vision; “golf is the hook; education is the payoff". 57% of our scholars are the first in their family to attend higher education and 36% of new scholars have an EFC of $0, meaning their family has no means to support their college education. The scholarship program encourages community engagement beyond high school, and scholars return to Pro Kids to be mentors to younger members. 16% of Pro Kids Staff are Pro Kids and/or First Tee program alumni. Many staff members are current City Heights or Oceanside residents.
