Founded in 2001, Public Knowledge is a public interest advocacy organization in Washington, DC, that preserves the openness of the Internet and the public's access to knowledge, promotes creativity through balanced copyright, and upholds and protects the rights of consumers to use innovative technology lawfully.

With a reputation as a smart, effective, and tech-savvy advocacy organization, Public Knowledge is a trusted voice in Washington, maintaining a high degree of credibility on increasingly complex communications and IP policy issues.

Who We Are

Public Knowledge is highly regarded for our lawyers' expertise, which lies in the unique intersection of federal media and telecommunications law, Internet law, and copyright law--an intersection that is increasingly relevant as these issues overlap and converge.

What We Do

Public Knowledge is involved in a wide range of proceedings and debates in administrative agencies, the federal courts, and the executive branch. The staff seek to ensure a democratic, competitive, and open communications system through day-to-day policy and legal work, press and public education, and outreach to affected constitutencies, especially small businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists.

Our Current Projects and Priorities

  • Promote an open and competitive wireless ecosystem and preserve the openness of the Internet
  • Prevent copyright enforcement from stifling the rights of users--like libraries, educators, artists, documentarians, and journalists, among others
  • Encourage creative solutions to spectrum policy and the future of video
  • Preserve balance in international negotiations that will effect IP, telecom, and internet policy domestically and abroad
