Putnam Service Dogs Inc

Putnam Service Dogs was founded in 2016 by Nancy Teague, who recognized the strong, unmet need for service dogs for people with physical disabilities other than blindness. Our service dogs are free. Our training to teach a recipient how to work well with their dog is also free. Your support is truly changing lives - 1 dog at a time.

We adopt carefully selected, mixed breed dogs from rescue groups to train as our service dogs. We seek dogs who are focused, very people oriented, friendly, non-aggressive, good retrievers, and responsive to training. We use only positive, humane training methods so our dogs will love and trust humans - essential for service dogs.

 Each of our graduating dog  is carefully matched to a waiting applicant. The dog is matched, based on its size, energy level, abilities, and temperament. The chemistry of the match has to be right also.  The dog and recipient have to deeply like each other. The bond has to be very close between them.

Our service dogs perform tasks their recipient can't do for themselves. Retrieving dropped items is the most frequently requested task. Each dog is uniquely trained to assist their matched recipient. All of our dogs are trained to be calm, unflappable, and highly obedient in public. They open up their recipient's lives, giving them the confidence and ability to venture out into their community. 

Your support is changing lives - 1 dog at a time. We recently received this greeting card from Benji's recipient, who made this drawing/painting of her beloved Benji. She has a rigid spine, and can't even look down. She has no peripheral vision. If she drops something, Benji retrieves it. With Benji at her side, helping her navigate, she now regularly leaves her home to shop, even sight see.  Here they are enjoying a beautiful day together.
