RAM has 2 key programs that help us carry out our mission. Part 1 is a monthly program provided for boys currently living in foster care group homes. Once a month, the boys are given a hands-on opportunity to learn different life skills like how to change a tire, how to tie a tie, or the art of cooking a simple meal. They can also learn about different job opportunities and the skills needed to be successful in that field. During the event, volunteers stress the importance of character, self-reliance, and personal accountability. At the end of the day, we hope the boys leave knowing they are loved by God and important to us and the community they live in.
Part 2 is the Launch Pad program. When a child turns 18 they "age out" of foster care. Our Launchpad program is designed to provide a safe home, with clear boundaries and expectations. The focus of the home is to provide a stable family environment where we can meet the boy's physical, emotional, and educational needs while showing them the love of Christ. By providing the boys with love, and stability, we believe they will be able to develop an identity that supports personal responsibility and success.
It is difficult to get a testimonial from a teenage boy on how much he has learned from one of our skills day events. I can however offer a personal observation. We have been hosting these events every month for 6 years. We have introduced the boys to careers in the fire and police departments, body shop work, and the many jobs available in aviation. We spent one Saturday just learning life skills like how to change a tire or check the oil in the engine, as well as how to interview for a job or make a good first impression. While the lesson for the day may change the objective is always the same. To connect strong men with boys in need of encouragement and solid role models. I have watched time and again closed and discouraged boys open up and engage when given the support and personal attention they encounter at a RAM Skills Day. It is a great moment at the end of the day, to watch the boys shake hands or often even hug one of the volunteers before they leave. I often believe the volunteers receive as much from the event as the boys. They are amazing young men and we are blessed to spend time with them.
