TRAGEDY STRIKES a loved one at a moment's notice. YOU HAVE TO DROP EVERYTHING and relocate to a faraway place for an undetermined amount of time to TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHICH YOU NEVER PLANNED. This happens to people all over the country who end up sleeping in their car and in waiting rooms of hospitals, while their loved ones receive extensive medical care and treatment. TRAGEDY CARES LITTLE for the well-being of anyone. Especially when care is what the Caregiver needs more than ANYTHING.

The Mission of Rathgeber Hospitality House is to provide a 

home-away-from-home in a safe, secure, affordable, caring environment to families of patients at United Regional Hospital and other medical facilities in Wichita Falls.

Caring Through Adversity

When my sister, Jimmie, broke her back in a terrible accident, our lives changed in an instant. Facing a life-threatening medical condition, she was admitted to the hospital in Wichita Falls. This is the story of our shared struggle, my devotion to her care, and the incredible support we received from the Rathgeber Hospitality House.

The Accident and Its Aftermath

The accident was sudden and shocking, leaving Jimmie with severe injuries. The initial days were filled with uncertainty and fear as we navigated through complex medical decisions. I knew I had to be strong for her, but the stress and exhaustion were overwhelming. Our family rallied together, but the burden of being Jimmie's primary caregiver fell largely on my shoulders.

A Haven of Support

Amidst the chaos, we found a beacon of hope at Rathgeber Hospitality House. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us with open arms, providing not just a place to stay, but a sanctuary of comfort and support. The accommodations were pristine and peaceful, offering a stark contrast to the hospital's sterile environment. This became our home away from home for over a month, a place where I could recharge and gather the strength to face each new day.

A Sister’s Devotion

Taking care of Jimmie was both a challenge and a privilege. Every morning, I would arrive at her bedside, ready to assist with her needs. We would pray, talk, laugh, and sometimes cry together, cherishing every moment despite the circumstances. I helped her with daily tasks, managed her medications, and coordinated with her medical team. The bond between us grew stronger with each passing day, fueled by love and determination.

The Staff’s Unwavering Kindness

The staff at Rathgeber Hospitality House were nothing short of angels. They anticipated our needs and offered unwavering support, often going above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Whether it was providing a place for a hot meal after a long day at the hospital or simply offering a kind word and a smile, their generosity knew no bounds.

One of the most remarkable aspects of our stay was the sense of community we felt with other families at the Rathgeber Hospitality House. Each of us was facing our own battles, yet we found solace in sharing our stories and supporting one another. The staff's kindness and the peaceful environment of Rathgeber Hospitality House played a crucial role in this journey. Their accommodations allowed me to focus on what mattered most: being there for my sister.

Looking back, I am filled with immense gratitude for everyone who helped us through this difficult time. The Rathgeber Hospitality House staff were more than facility caretakers; they became part of our extended family. Their compassion and dedication made a world of difference, providing a foundation of support that carried us through the darkest days. 

In the end, Jimmie's strength and resilience, combined with the love of her family and the kindness of strangers, led us to a place of hope and healing. Our time at Rathgeber Hospitality House will forever be etched in our hearts as a testament to the power of community and the enduring bond of sisterly love.
