RFL is a solution-based skill center supporting youth in homelessness prevention, education & employment, and lifeline support networks. RFL offers a unique Educational Learning Lab program; a full-time Mental Health Counselor, through a partnership with the Pinellas County Public Defender's Office; legal services provided through the Community Law Program, supported by the St. Petersburg Bar Association; Mentor Program; Youth Council; Mommy & Me; Keys to Independence; and more. RFL is a family environment where young people find basic needs like food & meal kits; personal & hygiene supplies; caring support; and have access to laundry and shower facilities. We understand that until immediate basic needs are met, it is nearly impossible to contemplate the future...and RFL believes that all young people deserve the opportunity for a successful future.
OUR MISSION
To provide support, resources and guidance former foster care youth need to successfully transition to adulthood.
QUOTES FROM RFL YOUTH
“My past does not define me! My future defines me. I feel that I am now preparing for life. I have a job and I’m enrolled in school for construction and I’m slowly getting to where I want to be in this life. Slowly but surely, I’ll be where I see myself one day, advocating for kids in foster care. And when I get to where I want to be in this life, I plan to become a foster parent to teens, because I know what it feels like when nobody wants you...But I have to thank Ready for Life for helping me set and achieve my goals and for helping me move forward in this life. They gave me emotional support, love, and they are my family. Anything I ever need I can go there and get services, and if I need someone to talk to, RFL staff always has time and an open ear just to listen.”
- Mimi, age 21
“I first came to Ready for Life when I was about 19 years old. I was still on independent living, so I didn’t really need much help. I needed more guidance and support. Which I came to find out Ready for Life would be that for me. They became my family and my support system! I have participated in Youth Council, The Amazing Race, and Florida Youth Shine, to stay involved and to have my voice heard. RFL really helped mold me into the adult I am now. I am working towards my Florida certification to become a Certified Youth Recovery Peer Specialist. I want to continue using my past experiences as a positive to help others.”
- Miranda, age 27
“When I first came to Ready for Life the first thing I noticed was how everybody interacts with each other and everyone looks out for one another like family. When I first came to Ready for Life, I was hurting, in a hole with my landlord and I thought I was going to be kicked to the curb if I didn’t come up with my rent. The RFL staff was able to work with me on “holding it together.” Their support, generosity and caring helped me build a plan on how to move forward. I participated in a Financial Literacy program that gave me helpful information on budgeting and a $750 stipend towards rent. They treated me with respect and made me feel welcome as if it were a second home and we are all part of this big, wonderful family.”
