Rebuilding Together Boston Inc

Rebuilding Together® Boston (RTB) is the Boston affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a national organization that renovates houses of low-income homeowners unable to pay for essential home repairs and much-needed updates. Non-profit organizations that own their own facilities are also eligible for RTB’s assistance. There is no cost to the recipients served.

RTB organizes and collaborates with skilled workers, trades people, volunteers, community members and non-profit organizations to help the elderly, veterans, the physically disabled, families with children and others in need who cannot afford to make critical repairs due to many factors beyond their control. These include rising property taxes, fixed incomes that have not keep pace with the cost of living and loss of income or financial hardship resulting from medical emergencies or advancing age.

Here are just a few of their stories:

Dorothy is 76 years old and has lived in her home in Jamaica Plain for 47 years where she raised five children. She spends most of her time taking care of her 47 year old mentally handicapped son who still lives with her, and cares for two of her grandchildren. RTB helped repair the unsafe second floor porch, removed an above-ground pool for safety, completed other safety-related upgrades such as smoke and CO2 detectors, and landscaped the yard among other repairs.

Beryl's three-family home has passed down from generation to generation for over 45 years. Her daughter and granddaughter—who has cerebral palsy—live on the first floor, while Beryl occupies the second floor. She raised three children and worked for 34 years in a hospital. RTB painted the home’s interior and exterior, replaced windows, doors and ceilings, completed bathroom upgrades, made safety –related upgrades, installed energy efficient lighting and did landscaping and yard work.

Coretta is a single mother. She moved into her home in Hyde Park seven years ago and gave birth to her son a few days later. She is a hard working mother who wants to give her son a warm, safe and healthy place to live. RTB completed electrical work, installed new windows, repaired the front walk and rear porch, painted the interior and exterior, landscaped and installed a basketball hoop and blacktopped area for her son (a special gift from our house sponsor), among other repairs.

Since its founding in 1991, RTB has completed over 350 repair projects and  engaged over 20,000 volunteers for an estimated repair value of over $6.5 million.
