Why Do We We Exist?

Red Feather was founded in 1995 by Robert Young, after he read about American Indian Elders freezing to death due to severely inadequate housing/no heat. After galvanizing support from his friends and family,Young traveled to Pine Ridge, where he and several other volunteers built a home for Lakota elder Katherine Red Feather. Our work continues today in her honor, with the belief that healthy homes are the foundation for healthy families and communities.

American Indian Housing Crisis

  • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has reported that of the approximately 2.5 million tribal members living on American Indian reservations, more than 60% percent lack adequate housing.
  • In tribal areas, 14.7% of homes are overcrowded, compared to 5.7% of homes of the general U.S. population. (Census Bureau, 2000)
  • On Native American lands, 11.7% of residents lack complete plumbing facilities, compared to 1.2% of the general U.S. population. (Census Bureau, 2000)

Our Mission

Red Feather envisions a world where safe, affordable homes are available to all.  Our mission is to partner with American Indian nations to develop and implement sustainable solutions to the housing needs within their communities.

Why Support Our Work?

  • In 2013, Red Feather exceeded our goal of serving twice as many tribal members as we served in 2012.
  • In 2013 we delivered year-round education, renovation, and weatherization initiatives at Hopi and Northern Cheyenne.

We can’t continue this important work without your support. Every donation COUNTS, no matter how small!
