In 2012, a collection of experienced singers and their close friends came together to talk about how to build a choral community that filled a gap that we had experienced in Silicon Valley. Could we build a choral community that was accessible, welcoming, and family friendly, while presenting high-quality concerts? Could we create an outreach program that nurtured music education within Silicon Valley schools?
The result of those discussions was the creation of Resounding Achord Productions, whose mission is to create a thriving and welcoming artistic community through musical accessibility, community involvement, and educational outreach.
In January 2013, Resounding Achord formed an auditioned adult choral group of 35 talented singers. Three months of rehearsals resulted in an outstanding inaugural concert, titled Blessings, which was performed to a packed sanctuary at St. Francis Episcopal Church in San Jose. At this concert, we launched our first outreach program, IMPACT (Igniting Musical Passion among Children and Teens), which allows all children through high school age to attend our concerts for free.
Our first full season in 2013-14 consisted of two sold-out concerts in San Jose, the second of which, Silly & Sleepy, included performances by the Cambrian School District Choirs, who we invited to share our program. During this season, we also introduced a second outreach program that awards scholarships for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Western Region Honor Choir to high school singers unable to afford the participation fee. In Fall 2013, we awarded six students with $100 scholarships. In Fall 2014, we saw an incredible increase in the number of applications and awarded 28 scholarships, totaling $2,800.
By June 2014, over 150 students had attended our concerts for free and we started to see families return from one concert to the next. Resounding Achord Productions also donated $500 to the Cambrian School District in San Jose for the purchase of instruments for their music education program, as well as $500 to the San Jose State Choraliers to assist with their summer performance tour to Europe.
All of Resounding Achord Productions’ initial funding was provided by individuals who believe in our vision. This group of 25 contributors is known as our Founders’ Circle. In July of 2014, we received our official nonprofit determination letter from the IRS, making us an official 501(c)3 organization.
Our plans for 2015 including increasing Resounding Achord's audience, and expanding the number of outreach programs that we have along with the number of participants in each program.
