Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA

To watch a kitten grow is a beautiful sight. Their first few weeks may be a bit wobbly, but they soon get stronger and are able to play and run. When the Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA was born almost 50 years ago, it was very small and fragile. Our founders never could have dreamed that the RHSPCA would grow into what it is today, an open-admission shelter with a live release rate of over 90% that cares for thousands of pets each year.

Our goal this Giving Tuesday is to raise $30,000 to support programming like our lifesaving foster program.

It's astounding to think that in 2019, the RHSPCA averaged only 5 animals in foster care. Today, we have 155 animals in our foster program on average. That’s a 3,000% increase in just two years’ time! This has been a tremendous lifesaver since our shelter has also seen a steady rise in intakes and our kennel space is extremely limited.

Foster pet scenarios range from under-socialized animals, litters of puppies, neonatal kittens, animals recovering from surgery, and pets with medical or behavioral needs. The RHSPCA contributes all pet supplies and medical care to support our fosters. Each foster kit costs roughly $50 to make and includes essentials such as: food, bowls, a litter box, a crate, toys, and monthly preventatives. Each donation of $100 will allow two kittens to benefit from a foster home. We distribute hundreds of these kits each year to foster families to help them care for our shelter pets. 

We are extremely grateful for everyone that has helped us get to where we are today by supporting our lifesaving work. Our increase in foster homes is largely responsible for the hundreds of additional pets that we've been able to save each year. Please consider giving a gift to help support this crucial program.
