During this extremely challenging time of COVID 19, “shelter in place,” is the urgent warning and reality of this pandemic. It’s the smart thing to do. But all of us at Habitat for Humanity know that there are far too many families for whom this isn’t healthy, either.
Houses already not healthy because of leaks, mold, deterioration and rodent infestations. Homes already overcrowded because the only way to afford rent or save up money is for extended family to stay together in a too-small space. Spaces that shelter, but only just. As the economic shocks from this crisis ripple out, these same families will be hardest hit. They always are.
These are the families with whom we partner. They are going to need our hand up now more than ever. And now more than ever, our work — much like flattening the curve — will require all of us, together. And so, if there is ever another order to “shelter in place,” our families can do so safely in their own Habitat homes.
We are anxious to get back to normal with our Habitat family of volunteers, staff, partner families and our ReStore customers.
Like so many we rely on the kindness of others to help us achieve our goals. Please consider donating and helping us end poverty housing here and abroad.
The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to bring people together to build homes, community and hope. We provide a hand up and not a hand out. When people purchase their Habitat home, they pay a sum to cover the closing costs and will assume a zero percent mortgage loan. Habitat structures the mortgages so that a homeowner’s housing costs do not exceed 35 percent of their total household income. Their mortgage payments then become recycled funds for future builds and the opportunity for more families to own their own
Let’s band together as a community to fulfill the mission right here in North Central Ohio. Your support provides that hope!
