OUR MISSION

Richland Early American Center for History - weaves a captivating narrative of our area's past through immersive living-history experiences, connecting visitors with the authentic essence of bygone eras. We proudly present two annual re-enactment events and landmark celebrations like Johnny Appleseed's 250th Birthday Celebration, freely available to the public. Throughout the year, our engaging demonstrations, workshops, and educational programs inspire a deeper appreciation for history. 

ABOUT US

We proudly showcase a thriving Blacksmith's and Cooper's Shop, complementing our historic 1812 Blockhouse and 1808 Log Cabin, enriching our quaint settlement village where early American life comes alive! Join us in preserving heritage and fostering a welcoming atmosphere in South Park.

EVENTS

Civil War Living History Days at South Park -  Visitors can meet authentically clad and equipped military and civilian reenactors who will discuss the everyday lives of Civil War soldiers, and the roles civilians played in supporting them.  Feel the thunder of artillery, witness firsthand Civil War medicine, talks from civilians in 1860's and take a stroll through the military camps. 

Celebrating Johnny Appleseed's 250th Birthday at South Park - Visitors were treated to a myriad of festivities and historical artifacts.  The celebration included the Johnny Appleseed Traveling Exhibit, an apple tree watercolor class by Juli Parsons, Johnny Appleseed Square Dancers, visits by James Hedges, Jacob Newman, and our guest of honor Johnny Appleseed. The event concluded with the Lincoln Highway Bluegrass Festival.

American Heritage Days at South Park - This year’s event featured a timeline with reenactors depicting various aspects of 18th and 19th century life, including blacksmithing, open hearth cooking demonstrations, musket demonstrations, games and children’s activities. Re-enactors set up camp in the park, wearing authentic period dress and answering questions from the public. 

Introduction to Blacksmithing Workshops were held at Hawks Nest Forge.  The participants were taught the history of blacksmithing, basic tooling, fire skills, steel/iron identification, and hammer control skills.  Each participant made hand forged nails and bottle opener which involved many different basic methods incorporated into the project.
