Preserving the Stories of Hemphill County — Together

Did you know that the River Valley Pioneer Museum relies on donations and memberships to fund our operations and special projects? Unlike many institutions, we do NOT have an endowment or guaranteed tax income to sustain our work. We are deeply grateful to receive allocations from Hemphill County and the City of Canadian’s Hotel Occupancy Tax, but together, these funds cover only about 40% of our basic operating costs each year. That means we depend on community support to keep our doors open, our exhibits growing, and our history alive.

Our MISSION is simple but vital: To preserve and share Hemphill County’s stories — from the early people and pioneers to the families, schools, and businesses that shaped our community.

Over the past several years, we’ve made great strides in updating exhibits and telling the stories that matter most. But there’s still work to be done. Research shows that visitors of all ages learn best when they can interact with history — not just read about it. That’s why our most popular exhibits are hands-on: the schoolhouse, the Native American mano and metate, the children’s saddle, and the model train.

Your support during The Panhandle Gives will help us:

  • Develop new interactive and hands-on exhibit components

  • Create historic driving tours of our community — like the Historic Homes Tour and the Hemphill County Native American Heritage Tour

  • Continue preserving the stories and artifacts that make Hemphill County unique
