Rolling Start Incorporated

Rolling Start, Inc. is located in and serves San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties.  For over 41 years RSI has been able to assist thousands of citizens who identify as having a disability to get necessary peer support, assistive technology, housing assistance, employment, food and/or social support and no cost to them.

We offer many programs tailored to the individual needs of our consumers, one of our most successful programs is called Living Well with a Disability.

LWWD is an evidence-based peer-led workshop that serves people with disabilities.  The program helps participants to set and reach quality-of-life goals by developing a healthy lifestyle.  It does this by:

• Increasing physical activity
• Developing and maintaining healthy relationships
• Improve nutrition
• Avoid depression and frustration
• Advocating for self and for community change

Here’s what a graduate of the Living Well program said:

“The Living Well program got me beyond the feeling that life was over and I was useless,” said Judy, a workshop participant. “I began to realize that I could help others with many of the situations that I had gone through and still had a lot to give.”

According to the 2017 US Census, there are over 161,000 people who self-identified as having a disability under the age of 65 in San Bernardino County.  RSI was only able to serve 1100 in 2017, and of those, we received funding for just under 50 consumers for the Living Well program.

It costs an average of $115 per consumer to go through this life-changing program – this includes the instructor, manual, transportation and food during each class session.   It is our goal to put 200 consumers through the program by 2020.   We will be tracking outcomes and expect to be able to demonstrate a reduction in symptoms of chronic conditions and to improve the overall quality of life.
