The Rosalie Rendu Center, located in the Carriage Manor Apartments in East Palo Alto, strives to break the cycle of poverty by educating, mentoring and raising the self-esteem of the entire family. The Daughters of Charity Ministry Services Corporation (DOCMSC) and donors from the broader community support the Center financially. The Center offers:

  • Adult English as a Second Language classes, where the small class sizes and friendly but structured atmosphere give the students the confidence they need to get started with their English education.
  • The ‘Tot Spot’ play group, which provides a structured play time for toddlers while their mothers are in English classes.
  • Homework Club, run by volunteers, helps children who live in Carriage Manor with their homework.
  • Adult computer training classes, where students learn the basics of word processing, learn to type, access the internet, set up email accounts, and learn internet safety.
  • A variety of mentoring activities, hosted by volunteers, for families connected with the Center and residents of Carriage Manor Apartments.

Some graduates for the Center work as Parent Involvement Workers, a program of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation.  The Parent Involvement workers provide bi-lingual support to the teachers and familes at Cesar Chavez School in East Palo Alto. The video above is from the early years of this program.
