Do you have a frail senior in your life that you worry about navigating the stairs in their home? Do you know that there are disabled neighbors who are literally trapped in their home because they have no way to get out? Have you seen a child at school and wondered if they are warm enough at night or living somewhere safe?

Rebuilding Together Montgomery County works with community volunteers to make sure our seniors have safety measures in place to prevent falls, our disabled neighbors can gain access to the community, and our children have a warm and safe place to call home. We provide home repairs and modifications to keep families struggling in their home environment safe and healthy.  Our work is as diverse as our recipient population. Some of our successes include:

  • replacing a furnace for a pregnant mom and her 9 year old daughter to stop carbon monoxide from leaking into the home,
  • Installing grab bars and handrails throughout the home for a senior with Parkison's Disease and Epilepsy who was prone to dangerous falls,
  • Building an accessible bedroom and bathroom for a father injured in a swimming accident resulting in paralysis,
  • Installing an elevator for an injured veteran who could not navigate the stairs in the home due to double-amputation.

These families all worked hard to own their home, and through fixed or changed financial status and/or a chronic illness or catastrophic injury, are finding that their home is actually a danger or hazard to their health and wellbeing. Through the repair efforts of Rebuilding Together and our teams of volunteers, these families, and hundreds like them, are able to remain at home in safety.
