Rebuilding Together North Central Florida Inc

When Rebuilding Together North Central Florida met Ms. E, she needed a little help making her home safe and healthy. A resident of High Springs her whole life, she worked hard as a paraprofessional in the Alachua County School Board (and in fact, still does). The house where she raised her children is the one she hopes to inhabit forever--a home she bought as a "fixer-upper" after pooling her savings, and has been upgrading little by little. 

Unfortunately, with her limited income, Ms. E was never quite able to get ahead of the needed repairs, especially when major systems began to fail. She was able to manage a new roof through her family and friends, but it took all of her savings to ensure that the home was dry inside.

When her water heater failed, she found herself unable to afford a replacement (along with the electrical and plumbing upgrades recommended to ensure that it would function safely). A hardworking woman, willing to do what she had to, Ms. E. spent the next several years heating water on the only working burner in her kitchen and taking it to the bathroom with her to bathe. 

Unfortunately, Ms. E's story is not uncommon in Alachua County, where an estimated 7,500 homes are considered to be "substandard" by a study done in the early 2000s.

Rebuilding Together is working to address critical health and safety issues, one home at a time by partnering homeowners in need with volunteers from our community.

Thanks to such a partnership, Ms. E's is able to take a warm shower from her bathroom, and volunteers made additional repairs to her kitchen, exterior siding, porch and electrical system to ensure a safe and healthy living environment.
