In 1931, the Russell Theatre opened its doors showcasing its elegant decor. Today, it is one of the few historic atmospheric theatres left in existence. Located in Maysville, KY it's the theatre where Rosemary Clooney grew up going to the movies & where she held the world premiere of her first movie "The Stars are Singing." From the outside the theatre appears to be in working order; the marquee, lobby, & bathrooms have all been restored after falling into disrepair, but the auditorium has not. The auditorium's roof was damaged in the early 90's (now fixed) but since the Russell was saved from the wrecking ball we haven't been able to raise enough money through donations or grants to restore it. It is owned by a 501c3 that is fighting desperately to restore the auditorium so that audiences can once again enjoy movies in the magnificent showplace. The stories from the locals will make you smile & break your heart at the same time. It was a generation's life in that small town; that was where they saw their 1st movie, had their 1st date, their 1st job, their 1st kiss. People come by anytime the marquee is on & stay for hrs sharing their stories. Please help restore the Russell for the community, Rosemary's legacy, and for future generations.
