After a disaster, homeowners need recovery to be as prompt and predictable as possible in order to limit the amount of time they're made to suffer the effects of displacement. SBP rebuilds for low-to-moderate income homeowners in the Midlands, placing a special focus on families with small children, the elderly, disabled persons, war veterans and the under-and uninsured.
SBP's proven-effective rebuilding model is based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) and is enhanced by AmeriCorps members and volunteer labor which enable SBP to rebuild disaster impacted homes in the Midlands in an average of 61 days, at 40% the cost of market rate contractors.
SBP's clients have one point of contact who works with them throughout the rebuilding process which ensures that they remain well informed at every stage of their recovery.
Gerald moved to Columbia from Myrtle Beach 18 years ago. He lived in a house with his family for the past 16 years. Gerald has three daughters named Brooke, Bailey, and Baysia. Prior to last year, Gerald would have considered the most defining moments of his life to be the birth of each of his three daughters. Sadly, the passing of his wife in their home two years ago had a deep impact on the family. After their tragedy, the Hunt family was trying to return to some level of normalcy when the storm hit. Gerald said the storm sent them into, "a tailspin." As the home began to deteriorate, Gerald became concerned for the health and safety of his daughters. He sent them to live elsewhere while he spent time cleaning the home. The roof suffered major damages and was covered by a tarp while the family awaited repairs. Water leaked into the attic and onto several ceilings, causing widespread mold to grow.
The cost of repairs to the property is overwhelming and the thought of selling or giving up on his home is unthinkable to Gerald. This house was selected by his wife and is the site of many beautiful family memories. In addition to the family's loss and the storm, Gerald also contended with 2 years of unemployment after losing his job of 15 years. Finding a new job that would accommodate his family schedule turned out to be more difficult than expected.
With the help of more than 200 volunteers, SBP rebuilt their home within 60 days of the family being accepted to SBP. Their home is now a safe, welcoming, and busy place, full of studying and preparing for college!
