Southeastern Chapter - National Safety Council

A nonprofit organization

Our mission is to promote change to eliminate preventable injuries, death and loss in the communities we serve.

SCNSC works every day to make the Midlands a safer place to live, work and raise our families. Funding for these community programs is crucial to our success. A few of our initiatives are highlighted below.

Alive at 25 was launched in 2007 after the death of 6 students in a single year at a local Midlands high school. The course is designed to prevent the #1 killer of teens - automobile crashes. To date, more than 150,000 South Carolina students have received Alive at 25 training, which has resulted in a drastic decrease of teen fatalities and collisions in the regions where classes are offered. Our goal is to provide this training to EVERY student and ensure that all South Carolina teens have the skills they need to make responsible decisions while driving.

South Carolina Operation Lifesaver (SC OL) is a nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail crossings and trespassing on or near railroad tracks. SC OL promotes rail safety through public awareness campaigns and education initiatives, including free safety presentations by authorized volunteers. We promote the three E's - education, enforcement and engineering - to keep people safe around the tracks and railway crossings within our communities.

Gabriella "Ella" Shumate was an exuberant four-year old who instantly stole hearts with her vivacious spirit. Her life was tragically taken on May 16, 2011 when she and her father were hit head on by a drunk driver. The Gabriella Shumate Memorial Foundation was created to honor Ella's life, bring joy to other children and promote safe driving and the prevention of unnecessary deaths. The SCNSC was honored to partner with the Foundation in support of the Run Ella Run Memorial 5k - a running/walking event held June 3, 2017.
