We didn't set out to start a nonprofit, but when we saw the need, it changed us. We knew we had access to the resources that could set the families in El Salvador up to thrive and we couldn't get their faces out of our minds. We knew that forging a connection between El Salvador and Texas would create a pathway for light to shine through.
Twenty years later, the people are still there, the need is still there, so we keep walking through the doors that God is opening for us. We have seen the change and tangible benefits of our efforts in the lives of kids and their families. We have witnessed the power of creating sustainable and empowering systems that set people up to flourish. We can't control the outcomes of each child's story, but we can help facilitate the connections between sponsors and kids that will help them have a chance to flourish.
We share the love of Jesus tangibly by providing opportunities and structures that allow people to succeed and learn; we care about the gospel being preached-in word and deed. As we work to facilitate flourishing in El Salvador, we offer an opportunity for people to partner with us and engage in the work in a personal and meaningful way. Image-bearers helping image-bearers.
"It has been 5 years of being part of this great SHIP family. In all that time, maybe we haven't been able to meet all the expectations and all the needs of our children and young people, but we are sure that we will do our best to help them move forward. Why am I so sure of this? Because I see the goodness and love that so many people like you are pouring in to help children in our small country. That motivates us to continue on, having a great example of love for God. We are trying to make sure that our students are not only getting an education, but receiving the love that perhaps they don't get anywhere else." (Miss Yammy, Principal of SHIP's school)
"I met the people from SHIP because they were building little houses. My house when it rained, so much water would come in and wet everything. I was embarrassed to ask for their help, but one day I saw Mr. Robert. I doubted that they would help me, but they did." -María (one of our Salvadoran neighbors)
"We are totally grateful for all the help that you have given us up to this day, not only in providing us with housing, but also in helping us find our God." -From a message sent by a family that SHIP works with in El Salvador
"I look back from whenever I went until now, and I see the lives changed and how much light SHIP has shown on that mountainside. It's transforming what was a very dark, scary place." -Shawn-Dell (SHIP Tripper)
"What means the most to me about the SHIP's work in El Salvador is the fact that they're meeting the physical and spiritual needs of these people on the side of this mountain, whether it's through providing education for these children-a good, solid, quality education for the first time in their lives-or repairing their homes or giving them a home or helping the moms become economically empowered and independent and self sufficient and meeting their spiritual needs through Bible studies and vacation Bible school for the kids. To see the Lord's work on that mountain and to see these lives changed and to see that everything that SHIP is doing is God-led means the most to me." -Grace (SHIP Tripper and former SHIP Intern in El Salvador)
