Soroptimist House of Hope, Inc. (SHOH) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to provide substance use disorders recovery services to low-income, chemically dependent women in need of housing and support to achieve sobriety and self-sufficiency. SHOH established the first residential recovery program in Riverside County designed especially for women. Over the past 42 years, SHOH has helped over 4,000 women through a comprehensive and effective evidence-based program design offering housing, companionship and guidance, therapeutic activities, and a structured daily routine that enables them to establish and maintain sober and healthy lives.
SHOH provides our residential substance use disorders recovery program for low-income women - many of whom would otherwise become homeless - at our Desert Hot Springs Treatment Center. At the 6-bed Treatment Center, residents participate in a 45 to 90 day program that includes housing, 12-step meetings, individual and group counseling, access to medical services, and life skills and planning workshops. In program year 2022-2023 (July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023), we plan to serve approximately 40 women at our Treatment Center. All services are provided free of charge to our clients.
By helping women to lead substance-free lives, SHOH contributes to the improvement of their physical and emotional health and supports their efforts to achieve self-sufficiency, which in turn reduces their reliance on public social and healthcare services and reduces their likelihood of living in poverty, being incarcerated, and experiencing homelessness. The ultimate measure of our success is witnessing the transformation of our clients into successful women who are free of the burden of substance use disorders and are leading healthy and happy lives.
Lisa was an alcoholic and drug addict since age 12. She became involved in gang activity and dropped out of high school. As her drug and alcohol abuse intensified, her family asked her to leave their home. Now homeless, Lisa was shoplifting to support her addiction and was soon arrested. This vicious cycle of drug use, criminal activity, and incarceration continued until she experienced a drug-induced psychotic episode and realized that she needed help. She was referred to SHOH through the County of Riverside's Substance Abuse Community Access, Referral, Evaluation, and Support (SU CARES) hotline and enrolled in a 90 day program at our Treatment Center. With stable temporary housing, medical services, and a structured daily schedule of 12-step meetings, counseling, and life skills training, Lisa achieved sobriety and began to plan for her future. Following completion of her Treatment Center residency, she moved to our Transitional Recovery Residence where she studied for her GED, maintained a part-time job, and successfully found permanent housing with a roommate. Lisa is fully committed to her sobriety and leading a healthy and productive life thanks to the housing and services she received at SHOH.
