WHAT IS THE SACRED VALLEY PROJECT (SVP)?

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of indigenous girls from the Andes Mountains of Peru. We work with adolescent girls from remote regions of the Sacred Valley with strong academic potential but little access to education.

In our program, bright girls are provided with a safe place to stay, well-balanced meals, access to schools, tutoring and opportunities for learning and work after graduation.

We have been helping Andean girls since 2010 and are looking forward to expanding our project in 2013! Check out our website for more information on what we do and why: http://sacredvalleyproject.org/

MATCHING GRANT!

We are excited to announce that the Princeton-Peru Partnership has generously offered a $7,000 matching grant for our fundraising campaign! To achieve this goal, all we need to do is meet our fundraising goal of $7,000 by December 31st!

What can you do to help us get there? Make a tax-deductible donation, share our campaign on your social media pages, or spread the word to your friends and family via email or good old-fashioned ‘snail-mail’. Every effort helps! And don’t forget, if you choose to contribute to our project, your dollar will automatically go twice as far!

THE LATEST NEWS!

This fall marks a major milestone for the SVP! We have recently been awarded a generous donation by The Keeler Foundation, which will help us to achieve 2 of our long-term goals:

  1. Purchase our own plot of land and build a permanent dormitory that will house 30 girls.
  2. Develop projects that will help us to become a sustainable and locally administered program.

We are currently in the process of buying a plot of land and hope to start construction of our new dormitory in December. Should construction go as planned, we hope to open the doors to the new building in August of 2013! We are happy to have this opportunity to grow and provide access to education to a greater number of girls from the Sacred Valley.

OUR FUNDRAISING GOALS:

With the funds that we raise we will achieve the following:

  1. Accept 6 new girls for the 2013 school year.
  2. Start construction on the first phase of a new dormitory, which will accommodate up to 30 girls and 2 supervisors.
  3. Provide after-school vocational and economic training in the 2013 school year through private tutoring and internships in order to give the girls the resources for economic independence.
  4. Create an income-generating project in 2013, such as a bakery or handicraft market to achieve our long-term goal of sustainability.

THE NEED WE ADDRESS

In the Sacred Valley of Peru, indigenous communities live in extreme poverty, struggling to meet even the most basic of needs. One of the most severe problems for rural villages is a lack of access to public services. Children have to walk up to 2 hours to attend elementary school, and secondary school is inaccessible. While boys tend to move into urban centers for work and education, girls stay in their villages. Without an education, these girls have few opportunities. Many become mothers before reaching the age of 18. With an education, these girls can become empowered indigenous leaders, benefiting not only themselves but their entire community.

LONG TERM PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  1. Construct and maintain safe and nurturing dormitories for female students from marginalized communities in the Peruvian Andes.
  2. Provide academic support and after-school supplementary education.
  3. Provide vocational training and create opportunities for higher education after graduation.
  4. Preserve cultural values by utilizing traditional agricultural, artistic and culinary practices.

GRACIAS!

Thank you for taking the time to check out our fundraising campaign and read about our goals for expansion in the 2013 school year! The SVP staff and board thanks you all, but perhaps more importantly, the young women of the SVP dormitory extend their most profound gratitude as well!
