Home. Healing. Hope.
Safe Black Space Community Healing Circles launched in April 2018 in response to increased racial tensions and trauma after the killing of Stephon Clark, an unarmed 22-year-old Black man, by the Sacramento Police.
SBS Community Healing Circles are meant to provide a safe space for Black people to deal with the rage, shock, fear, and sadness that so many of us were (and are) feeling in response to racism, anti-Blackness and police violence. These circles are grounded in African-centered principles and Black cultural values, offering strategies for how to engage in self-care and community care.
The SBS village (community members, faith leaders, mental health providers, educators) has been offering SBS Community Healing Circles, designed for us and by us for six years. We meet online on second Saturdays from 3-4:30pm PT.
SBS has expanded our offerings! We provide an annual book study group each fall. We celebrate and honor seven local Black families at our annual Kwanzaa Kutoa (Giving) Event every January 1st (one family selected for each principle of Kwanzaa). SBS also participates with other local Black organizations in an African Drum and Dance Circle each second Sunday, among other things.
Our ultimate goal is to provide opportunities for Black people to engage in and participate in culturally affirming healing strategies where we can thrive, even in the face of racism.
"The ache for home lies in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned." -Maya Angelou
