The History of Safe Harbor

Seeds of thought concerning the starting of an organization that would reach out to hurting families with rebellious youth involved in drugs, gangs, and/or the occult sprouted in 1997. After a family sought out means to get help for their teen who was submerged in a life of eating disorders, drugs, rebellion, thoughts of suicide, and Satanism they discovered there was no help to be found that could deal with all of these disorders.

As others came alongside them with encouragement and discovering many other families with teens crying out for help around them, a need was felt for something that could bring hope to families struggling with these and other issues.

Formally organized in April of 1998, Safe Harbor became a non-profit 501c (3) organization committed to educating the public about the problems of youth and to helping troubled youth. It’s name, “Safe Harbor”, and its lighthouse logo represents the need for safety in the storms of life, particularly for today’s youth. The lighthouse symbolizes Safe Harbor as a beacon of light to help guide people through perilous times. In October of 1998, Safe Harbor had grown such that the Board of Directors hired a full-time director.

Safe Harbor provides a Family Support Group, Refuge, that meets weekly. Volunteers and counselors meet with parents and teens to mentor them through problems involving drugs, alcohol, violence and self-destructive behavior.

Safe Harbor’s Resource department seeks to heighten public awareness about the effects of these behaviors on our culture. The organization has currently touched the lives of over 800 families and offers hope that even the most difficult problems facing families and youth can be overcome.
