The Salina Grace Foundation is a day shelter and community resource center that serves as an intermediary for services to those who are homeless or trying to prevent homelessness in the Salina community and provides a low-barrier winter-only shelter to protect homeless individuals and families during severe and inclement weather.
At the Salina Grace Community Resource center, we provide the resources of mental health appointments, medical appointments, medications, health and safety education, food cards, resume building, job seeking, bible study, court appointments, I.D. acquisition, and lunches. The Salina Grace Winter Shelter Is a short-term weather-activated emergency response to provide individuals experiencing homelessness a safe and supportive low-barrier shelter from November to March of each calendar year.
Our care managers take the time to understand each person’s situation and help them get connected with the appropriate agencies best positioned to help them. Our care managers also help coordinate services for the individual when working with multiple agencies in order to wrap the services around the person in a collaborative way to be effective. In May of 2022, we provided services to a total of 269 homeless individuals, 37 of which were new to Salina Grace. Additionally, we served 803 lunches, made 381 referrals to local agencies, and helped nine homeless individuals find employment.
The Salina Grace Foundation has established partnerships with multiple agencies throughout the community and created an environment of education, support, advocacy, empowerment, community giveback, and, most importantly, trust. By proactively reaching out to those on the margins of our society and seeking to help them improve their status, we are positively impacting the community one life at a time.
Poverty, unemployment, and lack of affordable housing are common causes of homelessness. These factors are exacerbated by personal vulnerabilities such as mental health issues, substance abuse disorders, trauma, violence, justice system involvement, illness, divorce, and disabilities. Social inclusion of people experiencing homelessness through community support and involvement or social connections is a crucial component of long-term recovery. Social inclusion offers opportunities to reengage with the community, form positive relationships, and create a sense of belonging for the individuals serving and those receiving support.
Our goal is to help these persons address the root causes of their homelessness so they can begin to reengage in the community as productive members of society and live their best lives.
As we achieve this goal one person at a time, our community will be a better and safer place.
