Who is the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation? Our mission is to increase awareness and action toward issues impacting seniors and to increase philanthropy to senior-focused organizations. Together, we can create a future where seniors are no longer vulnerable but vibrant.

Why a senior community foundation? We stand at a cultural crossroads. People are living longer, the cost of care is rising, and our senior population is growing at an exponential rate that outpaces the younger generations below it. Projections show that by the year 2030 the number of San Diegansage 60 and up will skyrocket to nearly 1 million, doubling what it is today.

This so-called “silver tsunami” will constitute one of the largest demographic shifts in U.S. history, and take an unprecedented toll on the already fragile network of existing services for older adults. As a result, the coming wave of seniors will face new and critical challenges surrounding their health, money, and loneliness. Our mission at the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation is to find solutions to these challenges—through the power of philanthropy and partnerships and you we can build and support the infrastructure of aging.

Enhancing Senior Centers

We see senior centers as so much more than buildings. They are gateways to the aging network, connecting older adults to fundamental services that help them stay healthy and independent. We believe every community deserves a sophisticated senior center, and we are working to develop a network of comprehensive centers across San Diego that meet the needs of today’s seniors.

Helping Senior Orphans

No one should have to age alone. As we work to strengthen San Diego’s senior centers, our programming efforts will emphasize outreach toward this growing and particularly vulnerable group of older adults.

Supporting Programs and Partners

Our grant-making is focused on funding organizations with outstanding and innovative programs for seniors. We are especially committed to programs that aid senior orphans, senior centers, and older adults who are homeless.

Increasing Philanthropy

Currently, just 2% of all charitable giving in the United States is toward seniors. Our goal is to move the needle in favor of this often-overlooked cause and create a permanent endowment that will benefit San Diego’s seniors in perpetuity.
