In 2015, SFJAZZ offered over 12,000 hours of free music instruction for students across the Bay Area.

Select Programs:

Jazz in the Middle (JIM)

Established in 2001, the Jazz in the Middle program integrates jazz performance and history in the language arts and social science classroom. Fostering connections between core subjects and the arts, SFJAZZ teaching artists and poet mentors engage students in a process of creative transformation. Students learn specific jazz concepts, experience musical performance, write creatively, and perform publicly.

Family Matinees

These affordably priced family-friendly concerts pass jazz onto the next generation. Each month, SFJAZZ brings families to the SFJAZZ Center for an engaging, entertaining and interactive musical experience. Select Family Matinees are followed by interactive workshops in the Joe Henderson Lab.

High School All Stars

A pre-professional training program for current Bay Area high school age jazz musicians. Comprised of two ensembles - the Orchestra and the Combo - the All-Stars rehearse and perform throughout the school year at the SFJAZZ Center, receive mentorship and clinics with leading jazz professionals, record a professional studio album, and appear at prestigious music festivals and competitions.

SFJAZZ Collective

The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star award-winning jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performers/composers at work in jazz today. Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ, the Collective has become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the jazz scene.

In addition to its outstanding line-up, the SFJAZZ Collective has been praised for its innovative approach to repertoire. Each year, the ensemble performs a new list of compositions by a modern master and new pieces by the Collective members (commissioned by SFJAZZ). Through this pioneering approach, simultaneously honoring music history while championing the music's up-to-the-minute directions, the Collective embodies SFJAZZ's commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form.
