iCreaTV Summer Video Camp

Help low-income kids become filmmakers!

Scholarships will enable students to attend iCreaTV Summer Camp and learn video production from CreaTV award-winning producers. In the 2014 summer camp local teens put together two 30–minute shows that aired on CreaTV’s Classrooms Channel 28.

Peace of mind for low-income parents

Help local teens have a safe, enriching summer experience. While students are counting down the days until school lets out, their parents are loosing sleep over how to keep their kids occupied and safe during summer vacation, when a summer camp tuition is beyond their budget’s reach. That’s where you come in! Your contribution will give CreaTV an opportunity to offer a $400 value to local families.

Learning from the pros: professional and life skills

But it’s not just about the camp fees.

“You’re giving youth the opportunity to step out of the streets and step into a professional environment in which they can learn, but at the same time teach.” — Osvaldo Ruelas, City of San Jose’s Youth Voices Initiative Co-Lead

The student-driven summer camp showcases the students’ likes and talents. Students not only receive training in storytelling, field cameras, editing, on state of the art equipment, but also developed confidence being in front of the cameras and a sense of self through the project topic. CreaTV producers have deep roots in the local video and broadcasting industry and a love for nurturing the next generation of video makers.

“Storytelling is my strength.” (14-year old participant)

Decoding the Visual World

Because so much information is communicated visually, it is more important than ever that our students learn what it means to be visually literate. Whether they are images in a text or a picture book, news photos in the morning’s newspaper, or a digitally altered photo of a fashion model on the cover of a magazine—images are a major part of our world. Learning how to create videos teaches children how to be critical and informed viewers of all media.
