Our History:

San Jose Rep was founded in 1980 as the first resident professional theatre serving the City of San Jose and Silicon Valley. In 1997, San Jose Rep, in partnership with the City of San Jose, opened a full-fledged performing arts facility - The Susan and Phil Hammer Theatre Center - that significantly expanded production capabilities and allowed the Rep to create national-level quality performances.

San Jose Rep's professional season consists of seven productions, performing September-July attracting about 75,000 patrons per year. Over the last fifteen seasons, San Jose Rep has produced 15 World Premieres and a combined 70 Bay Area, Regional, or U.S. premieres.

San Jose Rep's Outreach programs serve about 40,000 people.

San Jose Rep on Tour performs a professional production of a classic drama at schools throughout the region. Drastic reductions in educational funding have eliminated most,in-school arts programs. Due to funding cuts, getting the students to subsidized matinees is difficult due to the cost of transportation. To address this need, San Jose Rep on Tour brings 90 minute versions of classic plays being studied in the California high school curriculum directly to the schools.

Red Ladder Theatre Company is the improvisational outreach company of San Jose Rep. Since 1998, Red Ladder has been working with a wide range of under-served and disadvantaged groups in the community to assist individuals with the development of creative thinking and problem solving— the very skills necessary to be effective and competitive in the corporate world.Other programs include acting classes for youth and adults, and summer acting workshops. Through ArtSpark, the Rep welcomes 12,000 third graders per year to matinee performances.

San Jose Rep works with San Jose State University as a University Affiliated Theatre, allowing students to serve apprenticeships with San Jose Rep, appear in supporting roles on our stage and work in administrative and production support roles.
