San Miguel Mentoring Program

One to One’s Core Mentoring Program provides a critical adult in the life of a child who may be missing a parent due to death, divorce, or deportation. Mentors provide stability and continuity in the lives of children whose families are often in crisis by helping youth with social and emotional development.  Allan Gerstle, Director Of San Miguel County Social Services, commented on the positive effect mentors have had on these children and their families:

“There are situations where the mentoring services provided by One to One directly contribute to successful child welfare services provided by the Department.  Also, there are times when thoughtful and caring mentoring services keep family stress levels to a point where there is no DSS involvement. Absent One to One, DSS might have a child welfare case.”

The Study Buddy Program provides significant and
consistent academic help to struggling students and/or English Language Learners. Youth in this program are often struggling academically, and/or they do not have someone at home who is capable of helping with schoolwork.  This program is particularly effective and
popular with ELL, or English Language Learners. Ashley Williamson, Telluride Intermediate School ELL Director, commented about the program:

“One to One provides ELL's with an opportunity to build a life-long relationship with a committed, caring adult within the Telluride community.  Mentors provide academic support, foster responsibility, teach life-skills, and expose them to cultural experiences throughout the year.” 

One to One also offers activities, enrichment scholarships, and supplimental programs such as the Art Therapy Program, Art Apprenticeship, Girls Group, and the Quest College Scholarship Program.
