Sankofa Center for African Dance & Culture

A nonprofit organization

My name is Crissy and in 2011 I took a trip that changed my life. For 10 weeks I lived in Accra, Ghana, West Africa, working with The Sankofa Center for African Dance and Culture. I learned to dance, I took language lessons, I made so many friends, and I learned a lot about Ghanaian culture and therefore to love it. I ate some strange but delicious foods, I saw a lot of this green green country, and I did some work as well.

The Sankofa Center travels to schools and villages in the Accra metropolitan area and provides health promotion and education services. It is quite unique in that it utilizes traditional African drumming and dancing as a learning tool. The Sankofa Center also provides free HIV testing and while I was there I was able to help develop a program that now provides counseling and medical care to those we meet who test positive for HIV.

When I left Ghana, I never felt I would ever truly leave behind this country that I love so much and this organization which I really felt was making a positive difference in Ghana. So I stayed involved. Now, I help new volunteers prepare to go on their trip to Ghana and together we fundraise for the program and spread awareness any way we can.

By donating to the program you are helping to keep a small grassroots organization alive and sending volunteers to help run the mobile outreach program.

Thank you.
