San Mateo County is filled with some big issues, such as gangs, drugs, high school drop-outs, high obesity rates and a large number of unsupervised kids on the streets.

Over 39,000 children in San Mateo County schools don't graduate from high school; 43% of 3rd graders aren't proficient in reading in San Mateo County;  7.3% of the students consider themselves gang members; 15% of 7-11 graders have been bullied or harassed 4 times or more and 34% of the students are obese.

You can't change the world in a day, but if you start now you can change someone's world.

These youth need positive role models and HOPE.  The Sheriff's Activities League (SAL)  is serving over 11,000 youth and famlies in 12 chapters throughout San Mateo County, providing youth diversion for those first time offenders, tutoring, mentoring and healthy lifestyle choices.

SAL programs address the needs of our youth in the following focus areas: 1) Building the Bond between deputies and kids.  Providing the opportunities for deputies and kids to build positivie relationships.  2) SAL Healthy Kids - addressing childhood obesity. 3) Mentoring - a model program for juvenile delinquency ensuring social and academic achievements. 4) Leadership Training - Develop tomorrow's leaders through leadership training and community service opportunities.  5) Character Development - Providing positive role models.

We are looking for leaders that will say, I want to make a difference.  Someone who wants to give HOPE to a child in our own community.

Four Ways SAL helps the children with your donations:

  • Programs: Your donations provide programs to over 11,000 youth and families annually in San Mateo County and that number continues to grow. San Mateo County SAL currently has twelve chapters throughout the county to serve our youth with much needed programs.
  • Financial Aid: Your donations provide additional resources for financial aid to families that might not otherwise be able to afford SAL's programs and services. SAL activities are heavily subsidized to keep programs affordable to all. Most are offered for free or for a nominal fee.
  • Expanding Program: Your donations provide additional resources for the expansion of programs to serve the increasing need in our community due to the poor economic times and other providers decreasing services.
  • New Programs: Your donations provide the funding for new programs that SAL will determine by a needs assessment of our community as so many programs are reducing and eliminating services.

The SAL Chapters are always looking for volunteers to assist with our program. Please contact San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League  at 650.257.3408 for more details.
