SMRC provides free and confidential services to anyone experiencing abuse. We serve men, women, and children with dignity and respect regardless of religion, race, or sexual orientation. Empowerment and education on nonviolence are the foundation of our programs. We focus on safety through a holistic approach working with other agencies and resources within the community to help our clients become self sufficient. Our 24-hour hotline, safehousing, legal advocacy, and cultural outreach programs are the main tools used to accomplish quality support services to victims in their times of crisis. With over 70 trained and caring local advocates assisting us in our efforts, we hope to end all forms of violence and challenge the attitudes and beliefs that accept or tolerate abuse.
“I am very happy that there is a place like the SMRC. From the first day I walked into their office, I finally felt protected. I know that I have people to help and support me. They empowered me to create a life for me and my children that is free from violence and abusive behavior. I am extremely grateful to the staff at the SMRC.” SMRC client receiving donated funds
We believe that prevention education is crucial to ending domestic violence and sexual assault. This school year, we are set to provide over 200 violence prevention education lessons to over 300 students in the West End schools, which include Naturita Elementary/Middle, Nucla High and Paradox Valley Schools. Part of stopping cycles of abuse means teaching children important life skills, which needs to start at an early age. We begin prevention education with preschool-aged children and continue working with students until they graduate high school. Our prevention education program consists of a variety of effective, interactive, student-driven lessons to encourage positive social-emotional development. We use evidence-based curriculum and 21st Century methods to provide information and skills training in the areas of nonviolent conflict resolution, bullying prevention, child sexual abuse prevention, emotion management, and diversity appreciation. In addition, starting in middle school, we provide lessons on gender equality, media literacy, healthy teen dating relationships and sexual assault prevention.
“The prevention program that is facilitated by the San Miguel Resource Center has been most beneficial. The meta-cognitive approach educates the children in understanding the appropriate way to handle interpersonal situations. I see the children use the skills that are learned in these sessions.” Hank Nelson, Naturita 3rd Grade Teacher
