The Santi School Project started out in 2007 building a school in Sindhupalchowk district, progressed to repairing existing schools and training teachers, helped repair about 20 schools after the 2015 earthquake, and now focuses exclusively on training teachers to read aloud with their students. For the past several years we have worked with schools in Kavre and Nuwakot districts in the Kathmandu Valley.

Our mission is to empower children, their teachers and their communities to transform the experience of learning in rural Nepal. Together, with your support, we give children, particularly girls and those from disadvantaged ethnic minorities, a chance for a quality education.

During the pandemic, we've turned our focus to publishing our own books, both to supplement our read-aloud teacher training and give children some engaging stories to enjoy at home.  In addition to books, we also provide schools everything they need to set up a reading corner in a classroom, with shelves, low tables and chairs as well as carpet. Our immediate goal is to set up two classroom reading corners at 22 different schools, after teachers from each school have participated in our read-aloud training. In Nepal, it's not a tradition for teachers to read aloud with their students or encourage them to read for pleasure.
