Every year, more than 4 million babies are born in the United States. Newborn screening is a public health program which tests newborns for certain treatable genetic, metabolic, hormonal and functional conditions that are not otherwise apparent at birth. Approximately 1 in every 300 newborns in the U.S. has a condition detectable through the screening process. Without the screening, many conditions would be left untreated. This can cause disability, developmental delay, illness or even death.

But newborn screening tests aren't the same for every child born in the United States.  Some states test for more disorders than others, while delays in the system are more prevalent in some states than others.  Comprehensive, timely newborn screening should not be something determined by a state line.  And that's where Save Babies Through Screening comes in.

Our educational videos and brochures, available in multiple languages, are provided at no charge and used in every state in the United States and at least 136 countries.  They inform and save lives.

Our Packets for Parents program provides free supplemental screening to families in need.  The importantance of this resource was highlighted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Series 'Deadly Delays', which brought national attention to the delays and issues with newborn screening programs in states around the country.  These kits save lives.

About 1 out of every 100 babies is born with a birth defect of the heart, known as a congenital heart defect or congenital heart disease. Many of these more severe heart defects can be detected by newborn screening for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). However CCHD screening is not yet required in all states. Our CCHD and pulse oximetry newborn screening resources are available at no cost.  They, too, inform and save lives.
