Save Sand Pond is dedicated to preserving Sand Pond from urban development. Sand Pond is a unique kettle pond located in Warwick RI. This pond has been the nucleus of the community before the early settlers of Warwick. Originally used by Indians as a water source , early New England settlers arrived to farm the area. The pond is spring fed and deep plus it's location on Post Rd ( Rt 1)and easy access to Providence led to an ice house being built on the North side. After WWII the farms transformed to suburbs and Massasoit Terrace was born. A Quaker farmer named Ed Bigelow owned all the land surrounding the pond he platted the land out for house lots and set up restrictions and covenants to protect the neighborhood, pond and the rights of ways access to it. Massasoit Terrace is the kind of place we all wish to live in. Neighbors know you name and stop to talk on their daily walks, parents chat at the bus stop , neighbors shovel your driveway when you are ill or put you dog back in the yard and refasten the gate when he escapes. Three years ago our idyllic way of life was threatened by outside development. This threat solidified our resolve and we formed Save Sand Pond to fight this unnecessary and unsafe development and restore our neighborhood gem. For many years people fished, kayaked and now paddleboard and children swam and took swimming lessons under the watchful eye of a city lifeguard. Time and wear and tear took a toll on the pond, beach and paths. While fighting this development, we have also been hard at work cleaning and restoring the historic cemetery on the banks of the pond, doing regular litter patrols and working with the City of Warwick . We assisted with the Boy Scout Eagle Project to reclaim and restore the three right of way access paths to the beach area from different points around the neighborhood. We also have fun we started an annual "Pond Palooza" a family activity day at the beach with an anything that floats parade! We have comedy shows, dinner picnic nights, clothing drives and family photoshoot event on the beach. We want to protect and restore Sand Pond and its shores for the next generation of children to enjoy. Sand Pond is one of the clearest ponds in RI. It's the only swimmable fresh water pond in the City of Warwick and has been a URI Watershed Watch pond for 20 years. Please consider donating to Save Sand Pond . Thank You
