Sawtooth Society Inc

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is like no other place in Idaho. The size of Rhode Island, the SNRA contains 50 snowcapped peaks exceeding 10,000 feet, 500 alpine lakes, lush meadows, countless species of wildlife, and contains headwaters of the longest free flowing river in the lower 48. There are few who come to the SNRA and are not enraptured by the rugged beauty of the area. Are not inspired by its pristine nature. The SNRA is a step back in time. And the Sawtooth Society works hard to keep it that way.

Established in 1997, the Society is dedicated exclusively to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the SNRA. The Austin Kraal Memorial Volunteer program is one way that the Society gives back to the incredible area.

The Austin Kraal Memorial Volunteer program was created in honor of one who found peace in the SNRA. Austin Kraal had a deep passion for the Sawtooth Mountains and the tranquility they provide. In its first two years, the Austin Kraal Memorial Volunteer program completed nearly 40 on-the-ground projects while bringing over 400 volunteers to the SNRA.  Those volunteers included youth from all over Idaho, many of who had never been to the Sawtooths before. 

The program provides opportunitiies for youth and adults alike to step away from their screens and into a beautiful, wild, and natural environment.  In this way, the Program creates another generation of SNRA stewards while promoting the health and well-being of those who volunteer. 

Without the support of our donors and members, the Austin Kraal Memorial Volunteer program and the Sawtooth Society would not exist.  The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is in the hearts and minds of many throughout Idaho.  It is because of this love, that the Sawtooth Society has been so successful.
