SEL was founded in 1977 and has been continuously National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accredited since 1996 and Quality Rated Center since 2016, continually demonstrating good stewardship through responsible fiscal management. Scottdale Early Learning provides high quality education to low-income families in both center-based and community-based settings.  Currently, the center-based program serves 85 children through a program of active, hands-on learning appropriate to each stage of development and a low child/teacher ratio, high parent involvement and support, affordable costs, Early Head Start, Pre-K, and periodic assessments. Currently, over 15 languages are spoken by the children and families at the Scottdale School – with the majority speaking English, Somali, Nepali, and Amharic.

The community-based programs extend our early childhood expertise to an additional 150 low-income, at-risk children, and families who do not attend our center-based program through the Parents As Teachers Program and the READY Schools. The Parents As Teachers program uses home visits to provide research-based child development training and parenting support and encouragement to strengthen parents’ knowledge, skills, and involvement so that they are an effective first teacher for their children and can strengthen the kindergarten readiness of their child. The READY Schools, in partnership with the CDF Action and United Way are free, half day, early learning and family engagement programs that provide a culturally and literacy-rich environment for low-income refugee children (first and second generation) ages 3 to 4, living in an apartment complex located in Clarkston, Georgia, as well as in Stone Mountain.  The goal is to ensure that children are healthy, safe, prepared for, and successful in school.

For more than two years, SEL has had an extensive waiting list for center-based programs. This year we launched our Growing Above and Beyond Capital Campaign to double our impact, which is a large initiative. This has left a heightened need this year for support for operation support of our programs. Securing the future and sustainability of Scottdale is critical for the children and families of our community and a top priority is funding for operational support of our early childhood education programs. We need your support!
