The San Diego Museum of Art’s mission is to inspire, educate, and cultivate curiosity through great works of art.

The Museum is on the forefront of efforts to make art accessible to all in new and exciting ways.  Your gift will help connect people through art by providing engaging exhibitions, educational programs, and inspiring works of art. Gifts to the Museum Fund support the entire Museum, encompassing day-to-day operations, the care and conservation of our permanent collection, community programs, and incredible exhibitions. Thank you for your support.

The San Diego Museum of Art provides a variety of arts education opportunities for art lovers of all ages. Guided by the philosophy of Art + Empathy, Museum educators teach community and student workshops, create lesson plans for arts educators, and provide access to our comprehensive visual arts library. Educational offerings are complemented by public programs spanning from lectures and symposia to concerts and performances in the galleries.

Explore our permanent collection The Museum’s collections are all-encompassing, with more than 22,000 objects from across the globe, and ranging in date from 3,000 B.C. to the present. Perhaps best known for Spanish old master paintings–including works by El Greco, Goya, Ribera, Sanchez Cotán, and Zurbarán–the Museum also holds a broad collection of American, Asian, European, and Latin American art. Among the most important aspects of the Museum’s holdings in Asian art are the world-class South Asian paintings from the collection of Edwin Binney 3rd; Buddhist sculpture from China and Japan; and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The Museum also holds one of the strongest collections of German Expressionism in the United States.

The San Diego Museum of Art recently announced a strategic merger with the Museum of Photographic Arts. As of July 1, 2023, the Museum of Photographic Arts and The San Diego Museum of Art have merged to become one unified institution. The Museum of Photographic Arts is now the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA).

READ ABOUT FOSTER + PARTNERS In March, SDMA announced the selection of renowned international design firm Foster + Partners as the architectural partner for our renovation project. With an anticipated project groundbreaking in 2026, Foster + Partners will work closely with the Museum and the community to create a space that enhances the visitor experience and fits within the historical heritage of Balboa Park and the cultural trajectory of San Diego.
