Seeds 4 Success Programs 

• Eastport Girls Club — An after-school tutoring and mentoring program for girls in grades 5-9. 
• I Am A Reader — An after-school reading program for boys in grades 1-3.
• Parent Challenge — An educational program focused on increasing parents’ involvement in their child’s academic pursuits.

Our Results

Without intervention, research predicts students we serve would remain one to three grade levels behind and develop further frustration with school.   

In spring 2013, 50% of Eastport Girls Club participants were on the honor roll. In spring 2012, all participants scored “proficient” in reading on the Maryland State Assessment (a standardized test that is a critical indicator for students, parents, and schools). The three scoring levels are basic, proficient, and advanced. Having participants score “proficient” and achieve honor roll grades are huge steps forward for these children. 

After just one year of programming, the boys participating in I Am A Reader showed dramatic gains in reading levels and confidence in reading aloud to others.

 

It Takes More Than Just Reading Scores

 

Our staff helps participants and families access services that address academic and personal challenges. With encouragement from staff, most EGC parents are attending their child's parent-teacher conferences for the first time. Parental involvement is one of the best predictors of academic success.
