Two Magnificent Wilderness Areas: the Selway Bitterroot and Frank Church River of No Return

Together, these two Wilderness areas comprise the largest wilderness complex in the lower 48 states. In these nearly four million acres you will find remote, rugged and stunningly beautiful landscapes as well as the Selway, Bitterroot, Lochsa and Salmon River watersheds.

Here you can backpack the Idaho Centennial Trail, travel into the Big Horn Crags, hike to the historic St. Mary’s Peak Fire Lookout and cross the jagged Bitterroot Divide.  These are exquisite and far-flung places that need stewardship and protection.

The Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation takes care of this vast Wilderness complex by putting boots-on-the-ground. To keep the trails open and the wilderness accessible we recruit and train students and community volunteers to serve as wilderness stewards. We create opportunities for volunteers in wilderness and mentor future wilderness leaders.

We also partner with four National Forests to ensure that Wilderness values are protected and trails are maintained to high standards.
