Thank you for supporting Senior Services of Alexandria!

Founded in 1968, Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located in Alexandria, VA, serving seniors in the City of Alexandria. The mission of SSA is "to foster independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity." SSA is the only private, non-profit agency that provides programs and services for all older residents of Alexandria.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SSA has adapted its programs for the safety of clients and volunteers alike.  We're serving more seniors than ever--delivering approximately 2,500 meals every week--so your support is essential!  Our programs include:

Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels Program continues to deliver meals 7 days a week to homebound seniors in the area. Extra precautionary measures have been implemented when delivering to ensure client and volunteer safety. If you are interested in receiving Meals on Wheels, contact 703.746.5999 to complete an intake evaluation.

Groceries to Go

Alexandria’s seniors continue to receive a grocery delivery every two weeks. Volunteers are paired with a senior who they directly reach out to, ask for a reasonable grocery list, and determine the best day and time to shop for and delivery groceries. On alternating weeks, volunteers are in touch with the senior to check in, ask how they’re doing, etc., and to let the senior know they’ll receive a call the following week to get their grocery list. On grocery delivery days, the volunteers call the senior to let them know their groceries are on their way and that the volunteer will knock on their door upon arrival so they know they can then find their groceries at their front door. We are accepting a limited number of new clients, depending on availability of volunteers. If you are interested in the Grocery program, contact 703.836.4414 ext 119.

Friendly Visitor Program

Staying at home is an important tool in preventing the spread of Covid-19, but for those living alone, increased social isolation poses its own very real risks to health.  Senior Services is continuing to match volunteer Friendly Visitors, but now those visits are virtual, occurring through phone calls, video chats, or whatever platform is most effective for volunteers and their senior.  If you would like to befriend a socially isolated senior for casual conversations, please call 703-836-4414 ext. 120.

DOT Paratransit

DOT Paratransit provides safe, reliable, Americans with Disabilities (ADA)-compliant, curb-to-curb taxi service, seven days a week for residents of Alexandria unable or find it difficult to use public transportation. The DOT Paratransit program continues to provide transportation for registered clients who are living with a disability and use DOT for essential travel, including food shopping and medical appointments. SSA reservationists are able to handle calls daily from 8:30am-4:30pm. To make a reservation, call 703-836-5222.
