Imagine having a quiet picnic by a bubbling stream in a mountain meadow. A small herd of deer browses nearby and a black bear eats berries along the edge of the meadow. A family of marmots frolic among the rocks. A Calliope Hummingbird flies up to check out if your red shirt might be a tasty flower. The pines and firs fill the air with the scent of Christmas and provide dappled shade from the hot summer sun.

Giant sequoias and red fir in the grove next to the meadow are alive with the sounds of birds. Pileated Woodpeckers pound away informing others of their territory. After dark the Spotted Owl carries on a conversation with its mate.

The fire scarred forest nearby is also alive with a host of plants, insects, mammals and birds. Black-backed Woodpeckers need the burnt trees and, surprisingly, rare Spotted Owls and Pacific fishers, prefer large, dense patches of standing dead trees.

Sequoia ForestKeeper® understands the need for a varied landscape of plants, both dead and alive, on the forest floor to benefit wildlife, plants, and people. Without the dense forest, and occasional open patches the mountains can no longer filter and hold the precious water that every living thing in California relies on. When the rare pineapple express rains come the defensible forest becomes a river to carry floodwaters and debris downstream into people's yards and homes.

Support the forest by being a good steward and support the efforts of Sequoia ForestKeeper® to protect your forest, water, wildlife, and open space so that generations to come will see the forest because of the trees.
