Sewing for Babies Incorporated

Sewing For babies was incorporated in 2000 by a group of volunteers with a love for babies and a love for sewing, knitting and crocheting.  We provide baby layettes consisting of two dozen items for a newborn baby and donate them to the organizations in the Lincoln area who work with families in need.  We also make burial buntings for stillborn babies.

Our baby layettes are given to over two dozen local organizations including Birthright, Educare, Foster Care Closet, Friendship Home, Good Neighbor Community Center, Lincoln Crisis Pregnancy Center, Northeast Family Resources, People's City Mission, Voices of Hope, WIC, and the Child Learning Centers at the Lincoln High Schools.

We operate entirely on financial donations and donations of fabric, sewing supplies, and sewing machines.  Over the years we have been blessed with owners of strip malls who have allowed us to use their vacant spaces to do our work for payment of utilities.  We are currently located at 5930 South 58th Street, Suite L, where we are open every Tuesday from 10:00 to 3:00.  We have 12 to 18 volunteers show up every Tuesday to cut and sew items, fill the orders and deliver the orders to the agencies working with families in need of assistance.  Volunteers who make quilts, hats and booties or other items at home, drop them off at the studio each Tuesday.

In 2018 we donated 276 baby layettes to families in need in the Lincoln area.  We also made special items requested, including fabric shoe covers, cot covers and fleece blankets for agency day cares.  A total of 10,006 items were distributed during the year with our volunteers recording 8,721 hours to produce these items.
