Giving Tuesday 2020
WHO WE ARE:
The Shelby Community and Senior Center is an integral part of the Shelby community and surrounding area. Our main focus lies with the senior citizen population in our area. We strive to provide a fun, engaging place for our seniors to come socialize, exercise, and continue being active well into this amazing part of life called "retirement".
As with many organizations, due to COVID19, we went to great strides to open our doors to these folks as soon as possible, many of whom this is their main outlet and location for meeting up with friends. Several of our folks plan their schedule around OUR scheduling and offered activities, and often-times is the highlight to their week. Many other residential centers were just opening in late August. We were able to open June 8th and have been open ever since.
We have trained and hired an additional fitness instructor, through the generosity of the Shelby Foundation and have been given an additional emergency gift to offset some of the lost revenue from the loss of our rental income due to the shut down. Our instructor is certified through Silver Sneakers to add another socially distanced class three times . We have them mask in and out, temp in and out, and have multiple sanitation stations around the facility. We have a college student coming in a couple of hours per week to deep clean and help with general multi-purpose cleaning as well.
As a senior center that offers cardio, stretch and chair yoga, we have also joined a couple of other health plans as a participating fitness center, those being Silver and Fit and Renew Active. We have decided to keep our general membership fee as low as possible (currently only $52/year), especially with all of the unexpected changes these folks are already enduring with their doctor visits, solitude, and general fear of the unknown, we thoughtit best to be that normalcy for them. We want this to be a place that is CONSTANT, SAFE, WELCOMING, and INCLUSIVE. Our philosophy has always been to make this an extention of home. With home being a bit more lonely recently, we are that refuge for many of these folks during this challenging time.
With these things additional thing being a positive, we have also lost revenue for several of our main money-making endeavors. A few of the things we had planned in April were a bus trip to Columbus to Franklin Park Conservatory complete with dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse, our monthly meal open to the community that has generated in the past, enough funds to take care of one month's programming, utilities and payroll for us. We ARE hosting a "drive-thru" fish dinner Friday Oct. 9th with the help of The Vault Wine Bar in Shelby, in exchange for usage of our kitchen and facility for their changing business needs. We have a great relationship with The Vault as we help one another out, now and through many years serving Shelby together. Our past meal sponsors allow for all of the proceeds to benefit the senior center. We appreciate the local support and sense of community this conveys to Shelby. #bettertogether #richlandstrong
Our Spring Gala: We had many direct sales vendors, crafters, bake sale items, raffle items, etc. ready for the Saturday before Mother's Day. We had decided to postpone rather than cancel this event until September to keep these folks interested in the Shelby Community and Senior Center as a community partner and to assist their businesses during this challenging time the best way we could. With the uncertainty, the board sadly decided to cancel our in-house large events until 2021. This included our annual sock hop and car show that was on for October.
American Red Cross blood-drive took place at the Senior Center, adhering to Governor DeWine's distance and safety implementations, while trying to garner much needed blood for people that are ill and hospitalized. We held 3 events for the Red Cross.
In the past, the spring and summer months have been our greatest way to bring in funding. We rent the facility out to people from the community for events like weddings, baby showers, graduation parties, funeral dinners, etc. and are finally seeing a bit of an interest again in people planning small family gatherings.
On a brighter note, we have been able to clean, sanitize, paint and utilize some of the grant monies we have received this past year for requested projects. We hope to continue to be able to reach out to some of our folks for needed personal items, groceries and well-checks. Shelby Community and Senior Center is dedicated to the well-being of our senior friends and our mission of loving our senior citizen's like family has not and will not change inspite of the challenges we face.
We are #bettertogether!
