Dear Friends,

For close to 30 years our organization has served community members of all ages, connecting them to much needed resources, and building a unified community where all residents feel engaged, connected, and valued. Formerly known as the Sherman Heights Community Center Corporation , the organization expanded two years ago to help meet the needs of the surrounding community. Today, as the Historic Barrio District CDC (HBD CDC), we serve hundreds of families in the neighborhoods of Grant Hill, Logan Heights, Memorial, Sherman Heights and Stockton, through our three fundamental pillars: Arts & Culture, Youth Engagement, and Community & Economic Development.

Over the past couple years, our youth engagement pillar has expanded at a rapid pace. To serve the needs of the youth in our community, the HBD CDC developed the ¡Jovenes! Program. Currently, the ¡Jovenes! Program serves over 500 youth per month with its multiple activities happening daily at the Sherman Heights Community Center.

Today the ¡Jovenes! Program needs your help.

With your generous contribution, you make it possible for youth in underserved communities to take part in robust educational and recreational programs that promote academic and social achievement, thus allowing youth to explore their talents and nurture their growth to realize their highest potential.

With your donation, this year the Historic Barrio District CDC is able to support the following:

  • ¡Jovenes! Tutoring – This year-round afterschool enrichment program provides youth with a safe and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success.
  • ¡Jovenes! Camps – The goal of this program is to help build a child’s self esteem by providing learning opportunities that help them develop new skills. Camp activities include: sports, theater, arts & crafts, hands-on science experiments and opportunities for children to experience, discover and explore the great outdoors!
  •  ¡Jovenes! Arte + Cultura – Year-round art workshops are designed for youth to develop skills, experiment with different materials, and translate their own ideas into various forms of art.
  • ¡Jovenes! Teatro – This new theater program aimed at youth (ages 5-14), is designed to develop creativity, critical thinking skills and promote positive youth development. The curriculum, taught by a theater professional, will encompass acting, literature, and production. Research shows that gaining theater skills helps youth improve verbal skills, boosts achievement in reading/comprehension, builds listening skills, and fosters social ability and cooperation. This program will also afford our youth the opportunity to experience the magic of live theater.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Sincerely,

Devonna Almagro, Executive Director
