Prescription drugs are both effective and necessary in the treatment of various health conditions.  However, the misuse of prescription drugs is dramatically rising in Idaho and the United States. In fact, the National Center for Health Statistics reported that drug induced deaths exceeded traffic fatalities and are now the leading cause of accidental death in the US.  Ninety (90) percent of these deaths are due to prescription drug abuse.

I learned what that really means in November 2011 when my younger son, Mike Campbell, died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

We all carry around an image of what we think an addict is.  Michael wasn't that.  He was a warm and caring man. He was a father and an athlete.  He was a dedicated employee.  In fact, just 5 months before his death he was promoted to the position of Customer Service Manager at a local grocery store.  He truly understood that it was all about relationships. He knew his customers’ names.  He knew and cared about what was happening in their lives.  He knew when they needed a pat on the back, a kind word or a hug.  He had customers that followed him to whichever store he worked.  Mike was dedicated to helping others.  Boise truly lost one of its greatest assets.

This tragedy and many others like it demonstrate that we need a coordinated community response to effectively address the issue of prescription drug abuse.  SHIP proposes “Connect the Pieces” campaign to share Mike's tragedic story in a positive way, through education and participation..  The campaign provides members of the community with the information and tools needed to protect their family members from a similar tragedy.
