Shoals Habitat for Humanity

Shoals Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with families in the Shoals Area to eliminate sub-standard housing. Our motto is " A hand up and not a hand-out". 

Shoals Habitat was established in 1985 and is the oldest Alabama Affiliate but we are not the first one to build a house. Since building our first house is 1991, we were off to a slow start,  we have built 64 houses in the Shoals Area.

Everyone has a "my Habitat story" says Myra McDougal, our Office Manager. My Habitat story goes back to 1995 when my three kids and I were living in a 2 bedroom house. I like to tell everyone it was very warm and as cool as you would ever want it to be. The only problem with that is that the warmth was in the summer and the cool was in the winter. And that was the least of the problems."

Shoals Habitat built her house in 1996 and the family moved in less than a month after wall raising.

We asked her-Is Habitat successful in it's mission of helping the whole family? " I'd say so. My children have since grown up and all three are very successful college graduates with good careers and are always willing to give back to the community by volunteering. My son's motto is leave everything as good as or better than you found it."

You may not be able to go out and hammer nails, build walls, and put up siding but you can help us by giving the money that is so needed to let our volunteers build these homes.

One child, one family, one house at a time. We are making a difference.

Don't think that this is a giveaway. Our homeowners work 400 hours "sweat equity" on their home and well as other houses. This gives them the chance to get building skills and pride of ownership. Our homeowners have a house payment that includes mortgage payment, home insurance and termite bond and land taxes.

 

Habitat sells these homes to applicants at no-interest to the buyer. and make no profit on our houses. Our compensation is having a job well done and the smiling faces after homeowners are moved in.
